This piece marked a significant turning point where I envisioned myself as an artist. Created as part of my year 12 finals amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project proved mentally demanding yet profoundly therapeutic. Art, for me, is a means of self-expression and a liberating outlet where I feel truly authentic. The enchanting aspect is how time effortlessly eludes me when I immerse myself in the things I love.
Context (cited https://www.denimdayinfo.org) : Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honour of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.
This artwork to me is a celebration of my strength and resilience as I reflect on my own stories and experiences through painting and textile curation.
